Description

Eco Investigations programs are 4-hour long, expedition field trips led by Audubon staff, designed to strengthen critical thinking skills across multiple disciplines and incorporate hands-on, inquiry-based learning strategies linked with state-mandated Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills objectives for grades pre-K - 12th. We focus on the ecology and habitat of the Canyon, scientific observation and identification skills, and stewardship of natural resources. Students explore adaptations, habitats, communities, and the escarpment ecosystem, documenting their discoveries with scientific tools and journals along the way. Each grade level has a customized curriculum and field journal. We can customize the lessons to address specific student expectations and/or benchmarks.

Students Will

  • Create scientific sketches of live animals
  • Learn about animal adaptations and energy flow in a food pyramid
  • Conduct an outdoor field investigation using the scientific method to estimate biodiversity in a habitat grid
  • Discuss species of plants and animals that benefit from various habitats
  • Hike through the canyon forest while making observations about the natural world
  • Observe an example of erosion and discuss the process leading up to it
  • Discuss ecosystem balance and interdependence by creating a web of life in their field journal
