"History--The Write Way!" can be either reading- or writing-intensive. Professional writers with expert understanding of historical contexts help students interpret historical periods in their own words and through stories, poems, and plays, as well as by drawing on crossover disciplines. Instructors may invite role-playing with historical costumes or other activities to bring the past to life and fix the relevance of yesterday into young minds today.

Students Will

  • Help improve their fellow students' writing, learning how to give and receive criticism.
  • Gain confidence in their own ideas communicated successfully on the page.
  • Learn how literature is highly interactive and social art form that touches on many disciplines.
  • Discover that literature is a relevant art form that can help them make sense of the past and their own lives.
  • Explore the value of context and the power of language as a tool for shaping perception.
  • Gain confidence in literacy through a variety of intensive reading and/or writing exercises such as creating coherent letters, essays, and/or enactments.
  • Compare and contrast the historical and cultural setting of historical texts.
